STACK CT is one of the most recognized construction estimating software brands and is well-regarded for its PDF plan takeoff capabilities. It’s genuinely strong software — but it’s designed for GCs and larger construction companies, not trade subcontractors.

The assembly library is generic rather than trade-specific. A concrete sub using STACK will spend significant time building out assemblies from scratch before they can estimate efficiently. The SOV output is partial — it produces estimates and reports but doesn’t format them the way a GC’s procurement team expects from a sub. And at $499–$699/month, it’s priced for a company with multiple estimators justifying the cost against a significant bid volume.

PlanSwift has been around for over a decade and is known for its robust on-screen takeoff capabilities. It’s stronger than STACK on trade-specific workflows — partly because it has a longer history with trade contractors — but still falls short of purpose-built trade software.

The assembly system requires significant setup time before it’s useful. Pricing has increased substantially in recent years, and the product shows its age compared to newer web-based platforms. It also lacks native SOV output for GC submission.

Procore is the dominant enterprise construction management platform. It’s a genuinely excellent product — for GCs managing $50M+ projects with large project management teams. For a subcontractor, it’s extreme overkill at extreme cost.

Procore’s estimating module is an add-on to a project management platform that most subs will never use. The SOV functionality is strong because it was designed for GC procurement workflows. But at $600+/month with a required implementation process, it’s built for a completely different buyer.

Buildertrend is the leading platform for residential general contractors and custom home builders. Its estimating module is functional but basic — the real value of Buildertrend is in project scheduling, client communication, and document management for GCs running residential projects.

For a residential remodeling subcontractor who needs to submit proposals to homeowners, Buildertrend is more than adequate. For a commercial sub submitting SOVs to GCs, it’s the wrong tool entirely.

Excel is still the most common construction estimating tool in the industry — and there’s a good reason for that. It’s free, familiar, and infinitely flexible. For a contractor doing 2–3 bids per month with simple scopes, a well-built Excel template can absolutely get the job done.

The problems start at scale. Excel has no assembly library, no unit cost database, no automatic calculations per trade, no SOV output template, and no team collaboration. Every estimate starts from scratch. Errors compound. Version control breaks down. And when you’re bidding 10–15 jobs per week, you simply can’t build each one manually.
